About this project

Objective: Empower urban and peri-urban low-income communities in India to monitor and reduce their collective carbon footprint through accessible digital tools.

Climate change disproportionately affects underserved communities in India, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where pollution, resource constraints, and lack of awareness compound vulnerability. Despite government and NGO initiatives, many residents remain unaware of their daily carbon emissions or practical ways to reduce them. This challenge aligns with SDG 13: Climate Action and requires a grassroots solution that is both accessible and actionable.

The proposed solution is a mobile and web-based platform that enables individuals and community groups to log key daily activities (transport, energy use, waste disposal) and estimate their carbon footprint using localized open data. The platform will provide personalized and community-level nudges—such as reminders to use public transport, segregate waste, or participate in tree-planting drives—based on real-time behavioral trends and local resources.

Key features include: multilingual interfaces, low-data/offline modes, integration with open datasets (e.g., city transport, air quality), gamified community challenges, and visual dashboards for both individuals and group leaders. The working prototype will demonstrate data collection, footprint calculation, and actionable nudges in a pilot locality, validated with real user engagement and impact data.

Social impact will be measured through reductions in self-reported emissions, increased community participation in climate-positive actions, and improved awareness. The model is scalable to other urban and rural contexts, with potential for integration into local school, NGO, or municipal campaigns.
