About this project

Objective: To bridge rural artisans and handicraft makers in underserved Indian regions directly to consumers via a transparent, fair-pricing online platform.

Millions of rural artisans in India depend on traditional crafts for their livelihoods, but face exploitation by middlemen, non-transparent pricing, and limited market access. These challenges lead to suppressed incomes and threaten the sustainability of artisan communities, particularly in states like Rajasthan, Odisha, and West Bengal. This problem aligns with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by aiming to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for vulnerable artisan populations.

The proposed solution is a low-cost, mobile-friendly digital marketplace that enables direct-to-consumer sales for artisans, leveraging open data and local language support. The platform will provide fair pricing mechanisms, transparent transaction records, and educational modules on digital selling, empowering artisans while building consumer trust in authentic handicrafts.

Key deliverables include a working prototype of the online marketplace (web/mobile), integration of fair-pricing algorithms using open market data, onboarding workflows for artisans, and order/payment modules. The platform will have dashboard analytics for impact measurement, local language support, and an admin panel for artisan verification and catalog management.

The measurable impact will be assessed by increased artisan income, number of direct sales, and reduction in dependence on intermediaries. The approach is scalable to other states/regions, and can integrate with existing government skill/handicraft schemes and open data sources for product authentication and reach.
