About this project

Objective: Develop a digital tool to help Indian households assess rooftop solar feasibility and estimate applicable government subsidies.

Many Indian households are unaware of their rooftop's suitability for solar panel installation and the government subsidies available to them. This challenge hampers widespread adoption of rooftop solar, a key area for achieving SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and supporting the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's targets.

The proposed solution is an accessible web/mobile platform where users input their address or upload rooftop images, and get a tailored assessment of solar suitability, estimated installation costs, potential energy savings, and eligibility for government subsidies. The platform leverages geospatial data, public subsidy rules, and simple UX to make solar adoption easier.

Key features include: rooftop area estimation using satellite imagery (e.g., ISRO Bhuvan), local solar irradiation data, subsidy calculators based on MNRE/state rules, user-friendly guides, and a report for actionable next steps. The working prototype will demonstrate end-to-end flow for select regions.

Measurable impact includes increased household awareness, improved access to subsidies, and lowering barriers to rooftop solar adoption. The solution can scale to municipal or state levels, supporting policy makers and energy departments in outreach and subsidy delivery.
