About this project

Objective: To enable urban residents and municipal staff to locate, report, and improve public toilet availability and cleanliness through a digital feedback and maintenance platform.

Access to clean and functional public toilets remains a key urban challenge in India, impacting hygiene, sanitation, women’s safety, and inclusivity. Municipal bodies face difficulties in tracking toilet conditions, receiving timely user feedback, and optimizing maintenance schedules, which hinders progress toward SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and local Swachh Bharat goals.

The proposed solution is a deployable digital platform (web and mobile app) that maps public toilets using open geospatial data, enables citizens to locate facilities, submit real-time cleanliness and usability feedback, and routes complaints or maintenance requests to relevant municipal field teams. The platform will also support data-driven scheduling for cleaning and repairs based on feedback trends.

Key features include: interactive GIS-based mapping of public toilets (using OpenStreetMap and local datasets), multilingual feedback submission with photo upload, QR code integration for on-site reporting, an admin dashboard for municipal staff to track feedback and automate routing, and analytics for identifying maintenance hotspots. The working prototype must demonstrate full feedback-to-maintenance workflow and data-driven impact metrics.

Measurable public impact includes increased citizen reporting, reduced unattended complaints, and improved toilet cleanliness scores in pilot wards. The platform is scalable to other cities, integrates with existing Swachhata apps, and supports open-data sharing for transparency. Strong adoption could drive significant urban sanitation improvements at scale.

Milestones
1. Problem & Stakeholder Understanding
10 marks 21d
Conduct interviews with municipal staff and urban residents to document pain points, current reporting methods, and information gaps; review by mentor with stakeholder summary report.
2. Landscape Survey & Open-Data Sourcing
10 marks 18d
Survey existing public toilet locator apps, Swachhata platforms, and gather open geospatial/toilet datasets for the pilot city; submit dataset inventory and comparative feature matrix for review.
3. Solution Design & Architecture
15 marks 21d
Prepare system architecture, user flow diagrams, and data schemas integrating feedback, routing, and mapping modules; review with wireframes and technical design document.
4. Prototype / Build
30 marks 35d
Develop and integrate the GIS-based locator, feedback form, QR reporting, admin dashboard, and basic routing logic; demonstrate end-to-end workflow to mentor for code and functionality review.
5. Pilot & Impact Measurement
25 marks 35d
Deploy prototype in 1-2 municipal wards, gather pilot user feedback, measure reporting rates and complaint resolution time, and report quantitative impact against baseline; evaluated by real-user and municipal staff testing.
6. Stakeholder Demo & Pitch
10 marks 20d
Deliver final demo to municipal officials and peer evaluators, present results, feedback loop, and scale-up plan; assessed on usability, documented outcomes, and pitch quality.
