About this project

Objective: To enable panchayats and rural health departments to monitor, report, and respond to drinking water quality and supply issues in rural communities.

Access to clean and safe drinking water remains a persistent challenge in many rural areas of India, leading to water-borne diseases and hampering progress towards SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Local bodies and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation often lack real-time data and early warning systems to ensure continuous safe supply, especially in remote villages reliant on handpumps, piped schemes, or tankers.

The proposed solution is a digital platform and low-cost hardware sensor kit for rural water points that enables real-time water quality (e.g., turbidity, TDS, pH) and supply status monitoring. Data is transmitted to a central dashboard accessible to local authorities, with automated alerts for anomalies, and a simple mobile interface for field workers and villagers to report issues or view water status updates.

Key features include: sensor integration with open-source microcontrollers, secure data transmission, GIS mapping via ISRO Bhuvan/OpenStreetMap, analytics dashboards, multi-language reporting for village-level workers, and an open API for integration with state water supply schemes. The working prototype will demonstrate at least two water parameter sensors and a functional dashboard with data visualization and alerting.

The impact is measurable via the reduction in undetected water quality incidents, improved response times, and data-driven planning for rural water infrastructure upgrades. The solution is scalable across districts, and the open data approach supports wider adoption by different government agencies and NGOs focused on rural water supply.

Milestones
1. Problem & Stakeholder Understanding
10 marks 18d
Conduct interviews with local panchayat members and water department officials; submit a stakeholder map and a needs assessment report for review.
2. Landscape Survey & Open-Data Sourcing
10 marks 16d
Survey existing rural water monitoring projects and source relevant open datasets/APIs; present a summary document and gap analysis.
3. Solution Design & Architecture
15 marks 22d
Prepare a detailed technical design, sensor integration plan, and data flow diagrams; reviewed via a walkthrough with sample user stories.
4. Prototype / Build
30 marks 38d
Develop and test an integrated hardware-software prototype (sensors + dashboard + user interface); review by demo and code repository submission.
5. Pilot & Impact Measurement
25 marks 32d
Deploy prototype in at least one real/simulated rural setting; measure incident reporting, response time, and collect user feedback for review.
6. Stakeholder Demo & Pitch
10 marks 14d
Present the working system and impact results to a jury panel with a focus on scalability and sustainability; evaluated on demo effectiveness and Q&A.
