About this project

Objective: To empower district-level administration and citizens with a transparent, interactive portal visualizing key governance performance indicators using open datasets.

District administrations across India face challenges in monitoring and communicating their progress on governance and development KPIs, such as health, education, sanitation, and service delivery. Often, data is scattered across portals, not easily accessible or understandable for local officials or the public, limiting transparency and data-driven decision-making. This project aligns with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) emphasis on digital governance.

The proposed solution is an open-data visual analytics web portal that aggregates, standardizes, and visualizes district-level governance indicators from public sources like data.gov.in, Census, and state dashboards. The platform will enable administrators, panchayat members, and citizens to view, compare, and interpret real-time and historical trends for their district, fostering informed participation and accountability.

Key features include: interactive dashboards with map-based and chart visualizations, KPI filtering by sector and geography, open API endpoints for reuse, downloadable datasets, and role-based access for district officials. The working prototype must demonstrate integration for at least three major sectors (e.g., health, education, sanitation) using authentic open datasets, and allow end-users to generate custom reports.

The project measurably enhances transparency, data-driven governance, and citizen engagement at the grassroots. It is scalable to all Indian districts by plugging into additional open datasets and can be localized for regional needs. Impact will be assessed by the portal’s usability, data coverage, and feedback from district officials and citizen groups during pilot deployment.
