About this project

Objective: Enable citizens in diverse linguistic regions to easily access, understand, and apply for government welfare schemes using a conversational chatbot.

Many Indian citizens, especially in rural and non-Hindi-speaking regions, struggle to access information about government welfare schemes due to language barriers, limited digital literacy, and complex eligibility criteria. This gap affects millions who are entitled to benefits but remain unaware or unable to apply, impacting SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and the Department of Electronics & IT's digital governance objectives.

The proposed solution is a multilingual AI-powered chatbot, accessible via web and popular messaging platforms, which guides users in their preferred language to check scheme eligibility and assists with the application process. The chatbot leverages open government datasets, natural language processing, and user-centric design to provide accurate, context-aware responses.

Key features include support for at least five major Indian languages, real-time eligibility checks based on user inputs, integration with open APIs for scheme details, and step-by-step application support. The working prototype will demonstrate end-to-end user journeys, from eligibility assessment to application, with accessibility and privacy safeguards.

Measurable impact includes increased scheme awareness and application rates among target populations, reduced information gaps, and improved digital inclusivity. The solution can scale by onboarding more schemes and languages, expanding to voice interfaces, and integrating with local government centers.
