Inter-Police Station Missing Person Facial Alert and Tracking System

Objective: Develop a secure digital network to automate missing-person facial matching and alerts across police stations for faster identification and recovery.

India faces a significant challenge in tracing missing persons, with thousands unaccounted for each year, often due to lack of coordination and timely information sharing between police stations and jurisdictions. Families and vulnerable individuals suffer prolonged uncertainty, while police departments struggle with manual, fragmented processes. This problem directly impacts SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and is central to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ mandate for public safety.

The proposed solution is a digital platform integrating facial recognition with a secure alert and tracking network, connecting police stations nationwide. By automatically matching newly reported missing persons and found individuals using open-source facial recognition, the system will generate real-time alerts for possible matches and enable officers to collaborate across regions.

Key features include: facial image upload and matching, automated alert generation, geo-tagged case tracking, role-based access, integration with open datasets (such as NCRB missing persons), and a user-friendly dashboard. The prototype must demonstrate multi-station connectivity, privacy safeguards, and measurable notification accuracy.

Measurable impact will include reduced identification times, increased case resolution rates, and improved inter-agency coordination. The platform can scale to state and national levels, leveraging open data and modular APIs, and can be extended to other vulnerable groups or disaster-affected populations.
