About this project

Objective: Develop a digital platform for women in urban and semi-urban India to plan safe routes, access verified safe-spots, and trigger SOS alerts in emergencies.

Women and girls in Indian cities and towns often face personal safety risks during daily commutes, especially after dark or in unfamiliar areas. Current public safety infrastructure lacks accessible, real-time tools to help identify safe travel routes or nearby safe-spots such as police booths, hospitals, or verified businesses. This problem affects women commuters, students, workers, and vulnerable groups, mapping to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions) and departments such as Home Affairs and urban municipal bodies.

The proposed solution is a mobile-first platform that combines open geospatial data, community reporting, and government-verified safe-spots to recommend safe travel routes. The platform enables users to trigger an SOS alert, automatically sharing location with pre-registered contacts and nearby safe-spots. Real-time safe-spot mapping is maintained with input from local authorities, verified businesses, and user reports.

Key features include: route-planning with safety scoring, verified safe-spot directory, crowdsourced incident reporting, real-time SOS trigger with location sharing, and an admin dashboard for authorities to review safety data. The working prototype will include mobile/web interfaces, a backend for real-time updates, and integration with open datasets and APIs.

Measurable impact will be evaluated by increased usage of safe routes, reduced response times in emergencies, and improved perception of safety. The solution is scalable across urban and semi-urban regions, and could be expanded by partnership with local government, police, and community organizations.
